S3E28: joe biden: The white moderate democrat

In today’s episode of The World As I Like It To Be podcast, we discuss Joe Biden, the white moderate democrat and race.

Our post ABC News 2020 Democratic debate review is now complete.   Denise from California and I have watched the debate and extracted the most important moments and analyzed them from a political point of view.

Yesterday was the debate over guns, Trump tariffs and Afghanistan policy.  In this final debate episode we analyze the disturbing statements made by Joe Biden.

The former vice president was confronted with past statements he made on race. I want to remind listeners and readers of this blog that we have discussed racism here on a number of occasions as well as on the podcast.

We’ve been here before

You can go back as far as this post from last year where we discuss how the New York City Police Department, by accident, developed sensitivity training.

Then we discussed the four P’s of racism where I provide links to the profound documentary “The Eye Of The Storm” here.

But only a few months ago, we discussed racism in Brooklyn’s 66th precinct and the exploitation of women.

And just a few days ago Saturday Night Live hired, then fired a comic for past racist jokes.  The storied comedy sketch show said they were unaware of his past offensive jokes.

How does all this tie into today’s podcast?  Take a listen:

Bernie Sanders took swipes at Joe Biden, substantive changes from current policy were announced, but I saw two problems.

One for Elizabeth Warren and one for the democrats in general during the debate.

S3E19a: Common cause v Lewis the verdict

In our previous blog we discussed Common Cause v Lewis, one of the most important cases for Democrats as 2020 approaches.

As a brief recap, North Carolina’s Republican Party in 2017 drew district maps in order to ensure they held political power in every election no matter how many votes were casted for the opposing party.

This episode of American Swap articulates the problem nicely:

The Democrats appealed to the federal courts sided with them, striking down the 2017 maps.   The Republicans appealed to the US Supreme Court.

This summer the Roberts court famously ruled 5-4 against all cases involving the federal courts and gerrymandering. The chief justice’s shocking ruling states, in part:

“We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts…”
