I will be interviewing Detective Darnley Small, a retired trainer for the New York City Police Department.

S2E9 – Yoga for meditation and stress relief

Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning to yoke or unite the source of our being.
Yoga is a combination of poses and postures (asanas), breathing (pranayama) and meditation that focuses on stress reduction, and toning muscles.  This is achieved through slow, dynamic movement.  

These techniques increase strength, endurance and energy.  There is low risk of injury to muscles and ligaments as it is a non-competitive exercise regiment performed at one’s own pace.

The goal of these episodes is get listeners thinking about adding exercise to their daily routine.

We want you to understand exercise is not just going out and running for a few miles in the street or on a treadmill.

Yoga and pilates provides both strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and cardiovascular workout without the undo stress on joints and bones.

Episode Fourteen: Solutions in Training and policing w/ det small

In this episode I conclude my conversation with Detective Small a veteran of the NYC Police Department’s Human Relations Unit. We discuss solutions in training for the department  and policing the community.

I ask Detective Small to paint a picture of how the New York City Police Department would look if it wanted to improve itself, the quality of policing and its relationship with the public.

The answers were surprising.

In this episode Detective Small gives his views on some of the high-profile police commissioners NYC police department has ever had.

The police commissioner is hired by the mayor and becomes the face of the department.  He becomes its message, its spokesperson and it policy maker.   He becomes the focus of praise and target of scorn by the community.
